Concrete Preventive Measures

Since the inception of the network, numerous concrete measures have been introduced to promote healthy gaming behaviour. Major changes have been made to the terminals in 2003, the second generation of VLTs now having the following responsible gaming mechanisms integrated:

On Video Lottery Terminals

  • Playing time determined by the player at the start of the session (15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes). >>
  • Explanatory menu focused on chance. >>
  • Player’s bank displayed in dollars or credits to enable individuals to gauge the real value of their wagers, wins and losses. >>
  • 1 866 SOS-JEUX (1 866 767-5389) help and referral hotline number displayed on all units. >>
  • Clock always visible on the screen to prevent players from losing the notion of time. >>
  • Game symbols cannot be stopped by touching the screen. >>
  • Maximum wager amount per playing session reduced from $100 to $60. >>

At the Establishments

  • Individuals under the age of 18 are barred from accessing VLTs.
  • The Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux prohibits offering VLT users any gratuities (meals, discounts on food and beverages, including alcohol) in order to motivate them to play.
  • The Your Player Profile in 8 Questions pamphlet published by the Fondation Mise sur toi includes a questionnaire that allows players to identify their gaming habits and provides valuable advice on maintaining healthy gaming behaviour. The pamphlet is available at establishments operating video lottery terminals.
