Additional Prevention Initiatives

In addition to helping implement the Taking risks is no game training program and the voluntary self-exclusion pilot project for video lottery players, Fondation Mise sur toi  works with stakeholders on the development of complementary prevention programs and measures targeting areas where the ratio of VLTs is markedly higher than the provincial average. In that regard, seven sectors in different regions have been targeted — Baie James, Cap-aux-Meules, Maniwaki, Magog, Parent, Schefferville and Val-d'Or.

Below are some of the additional measures that have been set into place:

  • Since May 2007, Fondation Mise sur toi has been subsidizing an extensive awareness initiative in some 45 Aboriginal communities, several of which are located in five of the seven targeted regions (Baie James, Maniwaki, Parent, Schefferville and Val-d'Or).
  • In fall 2006, fall 2007 and spring 2008, Fondation Mise sur toi launched a radio and print prevention campaign created specifically for these regions, which are also targeted by the annual province-wide campaign.
  • In Schefferville, the SLVQ has cut the number of VLTs by 60%. Moreover, VLT operating hours in Schefferville and Cap-aux-Meules have been reduced proportionally by more than 35%, with the terminals now active only between noon and midnight.
  • For its part, the ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux, Québec’s ministry of health and social services, also implemented its own measures for these regions.
